New Features in SharePoint 2013

Have you heard about the new SharePoint 2013 but not quite sure if you are ready to take the plunge? Here is a glimpse of what’s new that may help swing your decision.

Look and Feel
The SharePoint user interface has overall been revamped in 2013. The user interface is very graphic and updated. Graphic tiles are now used in lieu of text to display the options when visiting a page.

User Interface

  • Users with the appropriate software configuration can now drag and drop documents into a library.
    • FireFox latest version
    • Chrome latest version
    • IE 10 desktop
    • IE 8 or 9 desktop + Office 2013 installed
  • List and Library Views show up side by side instead of in a drop down for document libraries making it more intuitive for novice users.

  • Naming conventions have changed like View All Site Content now is Site Contents which may confuse users who have become accustom to the 2010 or 2007 environment.

  • In place editing of columns/metadata and updating data in an excel format without having to find datasheet view in your ribbon.

  • New timeline view for tasks lists

  • Users can rest the pointer over a search result to preview the document content in the hover panel to the right of the result.

Administrative Changes

  • Site Actions is now a gear on the right side of the page.

  • Document Libraries, Lists, Calendars, Web Parts, 3rd party tools, etc. are now all called Apps.
  • You can visit a SharePoint App store directly from the user interface.>
  • Native Support for PDF iFilter and icons in 2013.
  • SharePoint 2103 has improved its performance with a few small changes.
    • Pages are typically smaller (fewer KB)
    • Documents are now stored in pieces instead of 1 BLOB, known as shredded storage, so versions don’t use up as much space and saving updates takes less time.
  • SharePoint 2013 utilizes claims based authentication only.
