Programmatically Replace LabVIEW VIs Using VI Scripting

VI scripting provides powerful tools for automating common development tasks. Scripting is the backbone of LabVIEW QuickDrop, allowing developers to create macros that can be invoked using keyboard shortcuts. This blog describes how to use LabVIEW VI scripting to automate the duplication of a VI and its references into a new VI. Motivation Over years of LabVIEW development, DMC has created a powerful and flexible state machine architecture that is well-suited for industrial applica...

Comparing Ethernet and USB cDAQs for Control Applications

DMC recently completed a project that involved controlling an applied load using a hydraulic cylinder. Ramping the load at a controlled rate required a fast control loop with analog feedback from a load cell. The speed of the hydraulic cylinder was determined by a proportional valve controlled by an analog output from DMC’s control system. Based on other requirements of the software, DMC chose a PC-based control system using National Instruments hardware. The customer wanted the control...

Using LabVIEW Quick Drop Shortcuts to Maximize Productivity

Using LabVIEW Quick Drop Shortcuts to Maximize Productivity

LabVIEW Quick Drop is one of my favorite tools for speedy LabVIEW development. For developers who aren’t familiar with Quick Drop, it is a development feature that has been standard since LabVIEW 2009.  Quick Drop is activated by pressing Ctrl + Space, then you can type the name of the VI or control you want to place instead of using your mouse to navigate through layers of the palette. However, the feature that really puts the “quick” in Quick Drop is creating custom s...

High-Speed Vision Inspection Presentation at NIWeek 2014

This year at National Instrument's annual conference, NIWeek, DMC was invited to present on "Real-world Techniques in High-Speed Vision Inspection." DMC is an NI Silver Alliance member with a specialization in vision. Ken Brey and I are Certified Vision Professionals and were excited for the chance to share some of the knowledge and experience we have gained through various vision inspection projects. We worked together with Dan McCarty, Sr. Software Manager at W.H. Leary Co. to cr...

DMC's Certified Vision Professionals

In January, Ken Brey and I passed the AIA’s “Certified Vision Professional – Advanced” exam. Passing the exam proved that we have a high level of knowledge about developing and integrating machine vision systems, and added our names to the list of CVP-Advanced members. This certification is also one of the requirements to be listed as one National Instrument’s Alliance Partners, with a specialty in Vision. Prior to the exam, I attended the AIA’s week-l...

Northwestern Robot Design Competition

For the fifth year, DMC was one of the sponsors for Northwestern University’s annual Design Competition.  The Design Competition (a.k.a “DC”) challenges students to design, build, and program an autonomous robot that competes against other robots in a simple task or game.  DC provides students with excellent hands-on experience in all the aspects that are required to make a successful robot, such as: designing electromechanical systems, working with various sensors an...

DMC's Brassband Debut

If you attended the recent Tres de Mayo party at DMC's office, you hopefully walked out with tunes like “Basin Street Blues” or “Muskrat Ramble” stuck in your head.  As one of the founding members of the DMC brassband, I’m proud to announce that our first “gig” was a hit! We played a set of six songs during the peak of the party and filled the southern half of the office with swingin’ traditional Dixieland and brassband music. Cred...

Thingomatic 3D Printer

Imagine being able to create real-life, three-dimensional objects just as easily as we print documents from Microsoft Word. Need a new case for your phone? Don’t buy one, just print it. Do you want a keychain customized with your company’s logo? Just print it. Pretty cool, huh?  It was this cool factor that drew Boris, Ryan, and me to the idea of making a 3D printer. During this year’s FedEx Day we brought this dream to fruition by assembling a 3D pr...
