DMC’s Annual Cookie Exchange

Every winter, DMC colleagues from across the country participate in a sweet tradition. Our nationwide cookie exchange is a fun way to connect across teams during the long winter season and spread some cheer.

How it Works

With more than a dozen offices spread around the country, it is always meaningful to connect both during and outside of project work. The cookie exchange allows team members to share their favorite flavors and receive fun mail! Participants signed up to bake a favorite cookie (or two) and ship them to other participants.

As our bakers got to work, they shared photos and recipes in a dedicated Slack channel. Participants loved receiving handwritten notes, family recipes, and delicious cookies. From classic chocolate chip to innovative flavors like coconut bars and peanut butter blossoms, our bakers’ creativity was on full display.

Cookies represent a micro-culture of what each family has been doing for decades. This DMC tradition first started in 2020 when everyone was yearning for connection. I appreciate the way that DMC still prioritizes this type of community.

Peppermint Patties Recipe Shared by Jared Ross

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups confectionery sugar
  • 1.5 Tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1.5 Tablespoons water
  • 0.5 Teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 Tablespoons shortening, divided
  • 0.5 Teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 C semi-sweet chocolate

Instructions:

  1. Mix confectionery sugar, corn syrup, peppermint extract, 1 Tbl shortening, water, and salt  in a bowl using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment until loosely combined but crumbly
  2. Knead by hand until it forms a smooth, toothpaste consistency (may need to add water, 0.5 tbl at a time)
  3. Place the mixture between 2 sheets of parchment paper and roll to about 1/4″ thick
  4. Chill dough in freezer for 20-30 mins
  5. Use a circular cookie cutter to make 1″ rounds
  6. Chill the rounds in the freezer for at least one hour
  7. Using a double boiler, melt the chocolate and remaining 1 Tbl of shortening until a smooth, runny consistency is reached
  8. Use a fork to coat the rounds in chocolate. I recommend only taking 10-15 rounds out of the freezer at a time to keep the rest frozen solid, as the dipping process gets much harder as the dough warms up.
  9. Return the coated patties to the fridge for 30 mins to allow the chocolate to set

Sharing and receiving a homemade treat is a delightful way to brighten up the winter season. DMC’s annual cookie exchange is just one sweet way we display our core value of “have fun.”
