DMC Chicago YOE was Boat-tastic

With such harsh winters, Chicagoans make the most of their summers. Between attending free movies in Millennium Park every Tuesday night or food truck festivals on the weekends, there's never a boring day during Summertime-Chi. So, there were high expectations for DMC Chicago to host its second annual Yearly Office Event (YOE). Each DMC office hosts a YOE every year for visitors from our other offices. It's a great chance to enjoy fun activities together and relax with co-wo...

DMC Takes a Stroll for PAWS 17th Annual 5K Walk/Run

On Sunday, June 4th, a group of DMCers and friends got together for the 17th Annual PAWS Chicago 5K Walk/Run along Lake Michigan at Montrose Beach. We were joined by tons of other local pet lovers. The dog to human ratio was very close to 50/50, and the air was filled with the sounds of lots of happy yips, barks, and panting. What is PAWS? Nearly 9,000 cats and dogs are euthanized in Chicago each year because they don’t have a home, but PAWS Chicago finds homes for h...

Cooking Up New Ideas (and BBQ) at DMC's FedEx Day

DMC recently held another one of our favorite company-wide traditions... FedEx Day! On FedEx Day, everyone in the company takes a break from their day-to-day tasks and works on a project that they think will improve DMC. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with people we don't normally work with, develop new skills, and have fun. It's called a FedEx Day because the planned project must be delivered by the end of the day. With five offices and more employees than ever, the...

DMC Chicago Holds First Blood Drive

Like most people after the New Year, DMC wanted to find some ways to start 2017 off right. So, when our Director of Finance and HR Deborah Nunaley suggested we hold an onsite blood drive, I thought, “Yeah! That’s a great idea!" Why Give Blood? Having not donated blood before, I learned some very cool and exciting facts about being a donor: Of those people entering the hospital, 1 in 7 will need blood. Every time you donate whole blood, you can save the li...

FedEx Day Fosters Continuous Innovation

DMC recently held our 7th FedEx Day across all offices. On FedEx Day, everyone in the company works on a project that interests them and that they think will improve DMC. It’s one of our favorite company traditions! It's called a FedEx Day because part of the project must absolutely, positively be delivered by the end of the day. You can read about past FedEx Days on our blog: here, here, here, here, here, and here. Also, check out this classic FedEx Day video! How Does FedEx Day...

Inside Chicago's Weirdest Sport

Before I visited Chicago for my DMC training as a new employee, I had never played Whirlyball. In fact, I had never heard of Whirlyball until the week prior. I was excited to have the chance to play last week during a DMC activity fund event. It’s a fun tradition for the Chicago office. After trying it myself, I decided to spend some time researching this unique “sport”. Whirlyball Origins Despite its conception in Salt Lake City in the 1960's, there is a complete lac...

DMC Chicago Beach Volleyball 2016

After a record-setting beach volleyball season last year, we returned for our sophomore effort at North Avenue Beach. A new class of DMC hires brought some fresh blood to the team. For much of the season our team was also supplemented with new employees training in the Chicago office who would eventually make their way to New York, Denver, and Boston. With so many people, we often scrimmaged each other on a different volleyball court or in a game of frisbee. We made it to the champi...

What's It Like to Start Working at DMC Chicago?

The Chicago office recently filmed and debuted its first update video. These videos are shared internally at our monthly company-wide meeting and sometimes also on our YouTube channel. After a huge brainstorm and much debate, the Chicago team decided to focus our video on all the new employees that had been training in our office throughout the summer.     Emily Shanker, David Berno, Christian Owen, and Caleb Stoll all joined DMC just as we were making this video ...

Welcome to DMC, Dinner Theater, and the 1920s

For the welcome party of John Michael Fruhlo, Brian Sabino, and me, DMC took us out in style to Tommy’s Gun Garage, a themed dinner theater set in gangster-ridden, speakeasy-filled, flapper-crazed 1920s Chicago. From the moment we received our first email with details of the event, we knew we were getting into something interesting. We were told that there was a password in order to get into the theater, and that the password was either: 1) DMC Company, or 2) Little Jake Sent Me. Of ...

Cheers to Our New Employees at a Chicago Distilling Welcome Party

DMC has several fun traditions for onboarding new team members, including a welcome party of the employee's choice. Cecilia, Jay, and I were treated to a cocktail class welcome party at the Chicago Distilling Company during our third and final jam-packed week of training in Chicago.  On arrival, everyone was greeted with an open bar and catered dinner from Warehouse Pizza. The pizza was amazing, featuring some unique toppings such as Bic Mac and the much admired Mac N Cheese. Our DMC...

Channel Wires and LabVIEW OO at the LabVIEW User Group Meeting

DMC hosted the Chicagoland LabVIEW User’s Group meeting again at our office this month. Over a dozen local LabVIEW users and National Instruments representatives met to network and share best practices. We started the meeting with a discussion of channel wires. Channel wires are a new feature in LabVIEW 2016 that allow communication between parallel loops. Channel wire types include streams and tags, which are somewhat analogous to queues and variables. These break the visual ...
