Making Waves: A DMC Welcome Party on the Hudson River

This past summer at DMC office activities were packed with outdoor events. From hiking through Rocky Mountain National Park to drifting in inner tubes down the Yakima River, teams coast-to-coast took advantage of the great weather to enjoy nature together.

For DMC offices in major cities, though, getting outdoors can look a little different. With no mountains to climb or canyon rivers to float in, the New York City team traded trails for jet skis, hitting the Hudson River in late September for a one-of-a-kind Welcome Party celebrating Sean Clarkson.

Jet Skiing on the Hudson

When you think of Manhattan, jet skiing might not be the first activity that comes to mind. But New York City Jet Ski offers adventurous New Yorkers and visitors a completely different perspective on the city.

Guests can pilot their own jet skis on an hour-long tour of the Hudson River, getting up-close views of landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. It was a fitting introduction to DMC’s New York office for Sean, who had never driven a jet ski before.

“This was my first time driving a jet ski. I didn’t realize how fast they can really go—60 mph is frighteningly fast when you’re on the choppy Hudson!” Sean said.

Sean and the other New York team members made their way from Port Authority to Hoboken, where their tour began. From there, they traveled past Midtown and down toward the Financial District, taking in the skyline along the way.

“We went down between the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island because not many boats go through there. We hung out there for a while playing around. The jet ski guide took some pictures of us and did some tricks. It was really fun!”

Welcome Parties and DMC’s Activity Fund give team members opportunities to spend time together beyond their day-to-day project work. Whether that means getting outdoors, trying something new, or discovering a teammate’s unexpected hobby, those experiences help coworkers get to know one another in ways that don’t always happen around the office.

Sean even learned something new about one of his teammates while they were out on the water.

“Jon Carson was going pretty quickly when we were out there. I didn’t realize he was into boating, and I never would have known if we hadn’t had this event! He even jumped in the water.”

A New York City Welcome

Welcome Parties give new DMC employees a chance to connect with their teammates outside of the normal workday. For Sean, that meant discovering Jon Carson’s boating skills, trying something completely new, and seeing the city from an entirely different perspective.

It may have been Sean’s first time on a jet ski, but with the New York team alongside him, it was also a fitting introduction to DMC’s culture of trying new things together. As for their next outing, Sean said he’d love to explore something else off the beaten path in the city. We can’t wait to see what the team comes up with!
