DMC Hits the Trails: Mountain Biking in Lake Tahoe

After heading west for a client project, Leigh Matthews and I recently decided to hit the trails for some mountain biking around the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The incredible topography of the area was a big change for us, coming from the Houston and Chicago offices respectively. We chose to bike the Flume Trail, a one-way, 14-mile ride at 7000’ to 8000’ feet in elevation. For perspective, the elevation of DMC's Chicago office is at an ...

DMC Chicago YOE was Boat-tastic

DMC Chicago YOE was Boat-tastic

With such harsh winters, Chicagoans make the most of their summers. Between attending free movies in Millennium Park every Tuesday night or food truck festivals on the weekends, there's never a boring day during Summertime-Chi. So, there were high expectations for DMC Chicago to host its second annual Yearly Office Event (YOE). Each DMC office hosts a YOE every year for visitors from our other offices. It's a great chance to enjoy fun activities together and relax with co-wo...

Low Cost Function Generator Amplifier DIY

Low Cost Function Generator Amplifier DIY

Introduction A majority of function generators are only capable of driving a couple hundred milliamps, which is fine for most applications. If you want more output current, you can shell out $400 dollars for a professional signal generator amplifier, or you can do what I did and hack one together for under $40. A signal generator is an indispensable tool for developing and testing electronic designs. You may find yourself wishing yours could output more current. You could test your po...

DMC Takes a Stroll for PAWS 17th Annual 5K Walk/Run

On Sunday, June 4th, a group of DMCers and friends got together for the 17th Annual PAWS Chicago 5K Walk/Run along Lake Michigan at Montrose Beach. We were joined by tons of other local pet lovers. The dog to human ratio was very close to 50/50, and the air was filled with the sounds of lots of happy yips, barks, and panting. What is PAWS? Nearly 9,000 cats and dogs are euthanized in Chicago each year because they don’t have a home, but PAWS Chicago finds homes for h...

DMC Houston Hosts Another Texas-Sized YOE

Remember last year when DMC employees went down to Texas to check out our Houston office for the first ever Houston YOE? Well, we did it again!  What is a YOE anyway? DMC’s YOEs, or Yearly Office Events, are a partially sponsored gathering of DMC employees and their friends that each of our six offices hosts near their location. In Denver, we go skiing, in Chicago, we go to the lake, Boston likes to head to the shore, and our newest offices (New York and St. Louis) ...

Cooking Up New Ideas (and BBQ) at DMC's FedEx Day

DMC recently held another one of our favorite company-wide traditions... FedEx Day! On FedEx Day, everyone in the company takes a break from their day-to-day tasks and works on a project that they think will improve DMC. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with people we don't normally work with, develop new skills, and have fun. It's called a FedEx Day because the planned project must be delivered by the end of the day. With five offices and more employees than ever, the...

Boston FedEx Day Produces Smart Bike Lights

Boston FedEx Day Produces Smart Bike Lights

It's not fair.  Your car shows brake lights when it brakes. Some cool cars turn their lights on when you approach your car at night. Some really cool cars change the intensity of brake lights when they brake hard.  My bike has a red light that turns on when you press a button.  NOT FAIR.  For my FedEx Day project (a day where our company lets us make anything for 'next day delivery'), I brought my bike into the future with the help of a coworker and a ...

DMC Chicago Holds First Blood Drive

Like most people after the New Year, DMC wanted to find some ways to start 2017 off right. So, when our Director of Finance and HR Deborah Nunaley suggested we hold an onsite blood drive, I thought, “Yeah! That’s a great idea!" Why Give Blood? Having not donated blood before, I learned some very cool and exciting facts about being a donor: Of those people entering the hospital, 1 in 7 will need blood. Every time you donate whole blood, you can save the li...

Geek Challenge: The Perfect Bracket

With March Madness wrapping up and everyone’s brackets broken once again, this month’s Geek Challenge is about what it might take to build the perfect bracket. It's time for all the mathletes out there to show off their skills. Imagine that for every game in the NCAA tournament you know the probability p for the favored team to win the game. For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume p is the same for all the games in the tournament. You fill out your bracket to reflec...

StevieBot. 50% Fish, 50% Slack, and 50%.NET

In my last Blog Post, I detailed how I used a Particle Internet Button to remind us to feed Stevie, DMC Boston’s office fish. In this post, I’ll discuss how I gave Stevie an alternate online personality. Automated personal assistants seem to be everywhere these days. We have Siri and Google Now in our phones, Amazon Echos and Google Homes in our houses, and plenty of other services and applications that answer our questions and provide us entertainment. At DMC, we now have Stev...

Automated Display for Colorado Ski Conditions

DMC Denver has been enjoying another great ski season. Every year, we find ourselves frequently checking weather forecasts and snow reports to track how much snow our favorite mountains are getting. So during a recent FedEx Day, I decided to automate a system for acquiring and displaying this data on a desktop LCD! On FedEx Day, everyone works on a project that interests them that they think will improve DMC which must absolutely, positively be delivered by the end of the day...

DMSki 2017: Adventures on the Slopes

DMSki, an annual ski trip that DMCers have been making to Colorado since 2011, was Denver’s Yearly Office Event (YOE) again this year. The YOE is an opportunity for DMC employees to meet near one of DMC's five locations for a fun trip planned by employees in that office. What started as an awesome time has grown into an even more awesome time with more and more DMC employees joining each year! If you want to check out the fun we had in years past, you can read about past...

Using IoT to Feed a Fish

"Stevie is a fish. Stevie has no motors. Stevie prefers that you don’t tap on the tank. Stevie doesn’t know what Wi-Fi is. This is a picture of a computer. It’s not a fish. Stevie is a fish! I bet Stevie wishes he had hands so he could play with tablets." This description is printed on a sign that sits next to Stevie’s tank. Who is Stevie, you might ask? Stevie is DMC Boston’s office fish, and he is a valued member of the team. Like us, he ...

DMC recently held our 7th FedEx Day across all offices. On FedEx Day, everyone in the company works on a project that interests them and that they think will improve DMC.
