DMC Chicago YOE: Fun By Land, By Air, & By Water

This year, the DMC Chicago office decided to keep things local and hosted our third annual Yearly Office Event (YOE) right here in the Windy City. Since most of us have already experienced most of the typical Chicago experiences, we decided to branch out a little and try some not-so-typical Chi-town activities. What is a YOE? First off, a YOE, or Yearly Office Event, is a fun weekend for employees from every office to gather at a specific DMC location. The event is partially sponsored...

Geek Challenge: A Place in the Sun

You are an engineer on site in Lebanon, Kansas. At sunrise on the vernal equinox, you hop in your hovercar and start driving directly toward the rising sun along the ground at a constant 60 mph. You continue driving in this way until the sun sets. What are your coordinates when you stop driving? Parameters •    Coordinates of Lebanon, Kansas: 39°48′38″N 98°33′22″W •    Vernal Equinox: September 22, 2018 • ...

Bringing Back Waffles for Business at DMC Boston

Bringing Back Waffles for Business at DMC Boston

For Throwback Thursday this week, I made an amazing discovery. Hidden in the back of DMC Boston's pantry was our rather dusty waffle iron! Not too long ago, Friday mornings were consistently celebrated with waffles for breakfast as a way to ring in the weekend. Realizing that none of the newer engineers even knew we had a waffle maker, Adam and I decided to bring back Waffles for Business! Bright and early, we started whipping up some waffle batter, including gluten-free batter for our...

Defying Gravity and Going Skydiving in Reno

Like every child growing up, I admired airplanes soaring through the sky. They seemed not only majestic but proof of man’s infallible ingenuity and perseverance. The Wright Brothers showed the world we simply had to push the limits with an incredible feat of engineering and determination. I had the same gut reaction anyone else would have: “Man, it’d be fun to jump out of one of those and hurtle towards the ground at 125 miles per hour!”  From Slack to the Skies ...

Bowlin' to Dodgeballin': DMC Chicago 2018 Sports Leagues

Who doesn't love a little friendly competition with coworkers? DMCers have participated in a variety of sports leagues over the years, from beach volleyball in Chicago to kickball in NYC. There's no shortage of opportunities for us to bond outside of the office, but nothing compares to that feeling of teaming up for something other than that engineering project you're making things happen on.  Chicago Competition DMC Chicago's colleagues have kept busy teaming up ...

DMC Golf Outing 2018

DMC Golf Outing 2018

Before starting at DMC, I had a tradition of participating an annual golf outing at Sydney Marovitz golf course which is the closest course to the DMC Chicago office. I decided to bring this tradition to DMC. There is a second tradition that seems to come with our golf outing - our outing is always condemned with overcast skies and the chance of thunderstorms. We thankfully lucked out once again with only light rain on the first tee box. We changed up the format this year fr...

An Intern's Guide to Surviving a DMC Summer

An Intern's Guide to Surviving a DMC Summer

Three months ago, I got a call while walking home from class in the last few weeks of the Spring semester. Immediately upon seeing the Chicago area code, I knew that this was the moment I had been waiting for—the decision from DMC for a marketing internship that coming summer! I was so excited to hear Jessica, my new boss, on the other end of the line congratulating me for getting the job. I called my parents to tell them the good news, "I’m moving to Chicago! I got the posit...

DMC's Internal Operations Team Sets Sail

"If this boat sinks, the company would be *in real trouble." This was the starting remark as DMC's Internal Operations team left Belmont Harbor on President & CEO Frank Riordan's boat. Every summer, employees are invited to take part in one of Frank's favorite hobbies. Boating on Lake Michigan is a wonderful time for us to enjoy each other's company and recognize the work we do throughout the year. On Wednesday, July 18, DMC's Chicago-based ...

Stranger Things are Going Down at DMC St. Louis

Every month at the DMC’s all-company meeting, a different regional branch debuts a new video informing the rest of the company of what’s new in their office. St. Louis took up the reigns recently with a spoof on the popular show Stranger Things. The video, featuring Patrick Corcoran (script), Chase Hollingsead (editing and script), and Caleb Stoll pokes fun at fishing and scam emails. Filming was a fun way to bring together the, then small, St. Louis office with its new employe...

DMC Houston Hosts Third Annual YOE-DEO

Last month, DMC Houston went back to our roots and took the third Houston YOE to the rodeo. This year’s YOE-DEO featured a crew of DMCers from across the country and included stops at one-of-a-kind places you can only find in the Lone Star State.   What is a YOE Anyway? DMC’s YOEs, or Yearly Office Events, are a partially sponsored gathering of DMC employees and their friends that each of our offices hosts near their location. In Denver, we hit the ski slopes, in Chica...

DMC Engineers Share Their Dreams and Eat Some Noodles

The DMC Boston team recently took a break from their busy lives for an adventure at Yume Wo Katare—an unique lunch location in Somerville, MA. Seated in rows on wooden benches, all facing the kitchen, we were served heaping (and rather intimidating) bowls of ramen. Our server explained that Yume Wo Katare is not a ramen shop, but a dream shop. The massive portions are symbolic of the challenges that we each face in accomplishing our dreams—if we can conquer these bowls than we can...

DMC Sees Tina Fey, Amy Poehler Perform Improv Show at Carnegie Hall

Last week, DMC saw an absolutely star-studded rendition of ASSSSCAT, the world’s longest-running improv show. The performance, which took place at the iconic Carnegie Hall, involved Tina Fey as the monologist and Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, Matt Besser, Horatio Sanz, and Rachel Dratch as improvisers. The format of the show started with a suggestion from the audience. Then Tina Fey would ad-lib a monologue based off of that suggestion. After her monologue, the rest of the cast ...

Employees Lead Company Improvements During FedEx Day 2018

DMC recently took a break from day-to-day tasks to participate in one of our favorite company traditions, FedEx Day. Routine work on hold, our offices still brimmed with life and projects while everyone worked on whatever they wanted.  FedEx Day is always an opportunity for fun, learning, and collaboration, with only two catches: the project must in some way help to improve the company, and it must be deliverable by the end of the day. This year, our employees took on everything ...

DMC Does Goat Yoga

This month, several DMC Chicago team members were lucky enough to participate in Goat Yoga as a team building activity at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Goat yoga is the latest yoga trend where baby goats run around the participants, climb on their backs, and make everyone smile during the class. We had three new employees attend this event, Justine (Accounting), Anna (Marketing), and myself (Marketing). This was an excellent way to introduce ourselves to some of our...

DMC St. Louis: All Sandwiches Considered

DMC St. Louis recently unveiled its new radio platform: 90.7 WDMC. At the May 2018 all-company meeting, the first podcast from this NPR spoof station was officially released. What hard-hitting story did our expert engineers in Missouri take on? Of course, they fearlessly informed us of the newest developments in the great sandwich debacle. The podcast spoof was inspired by the St. Louis office’s obsession with sandwiches. At DMC St. Louis, a deep love for sandwiches is rooted in every i...

Geek Challenge: Primetime Telephone Numbers

Geek Challenge: Primetime Telephone Numbers

I was listening to the radio, and some self-proclaimed geek said that her phone number was "seven prime numbers." At first, I interpreted this as "seven prime digits," which is probably what she meant. But then it got me thinking, 23 has three prime numbers in it (2, 3, and 23), and 373 contains six primes! The most primes you can pack into a seven-digit number is 22, so what number contains 22 primes?  Remember: neither 0 nor 1 are prime; and 5003 contains 5...
