StevieBot. 50% Fish, 50% Slack, and 50%.NET

In my last Blog Post, I detailed how I used a Particle Internet Button to remind us to feed Stevie, DMC Boston’s office fish. In this post, I’ll discuss how I gave Stevie an alternate online personality. Automated personal assistants seem to be everywhere these days. We have Siri and Google Now in our phones, Amazon Echos and Google Homes in our houses, and plenty of other services and applications that answer our questions and provide us entertainment. At DMC, we now have Stev...

DMSki 2017: Adventures on the Slopes

DMSki, an annual ski trip that DMCers have been making to Colorado since 2011, was Denver’s Yearly Office Event (YOE) again this year. The YOE is an opportunity for DMC employees to meet near one of DMC's five locations for a fun trip planned by employees in that office. What started as an awesome time has grown into an even more awesome time with more and more DMC employees joining each year! If you want to check out the fun we had in years past, you can read about past...

Using IoT to Feed a Fish

Using IoT to Feed a Fish

"Stevie is a fish. Stevie has no motors. Stevie prefers that you don’t tap on the tank. Stevie doesn’t know what Wi-Fi is. This is a picture of a computer. It’s not a fish. Stevie is a fish! I bet Stevie wishes he had hands so he could play with tablets." This description is printed on a sign that sits next to Stevie’s tank. Who is Stevie, you might ask? Stevie is DMC Boston’s office fish, and he is a valued member of the team. Like us, he ...

FedEx Day Fosters Continuous Innovation

FedEx Day Fosters Continuous Innovation

DMC recently held our 7th FedEx Day across all offices. On FedEx Day, everyone in the company works on a project that interests them and that they think will improve DMC. It’s one of our favorite company traditions! It's called a FedEx Day because part of the project must absolutely, positively be delivered by the end of the day. You can read about past FedEx Days on our blog: here, here, here, here, here, and here. Also, check out this classic FedEx Day video! How Does FedEx Day...

Inside Chicago's Weirdest Sport

Before I visited Chicago for my DMC training as a new employee, I had never played Whirlyball. In fact, I had never heard of Whirlyball until the week prior. I was excited to have the chance to play last week during a DMC activity fund event. It’s a fun tradition for the Chicago office. After trying it myself, I decided to spend some time researching this unique “sport”. Whirlyball Origins Despite its conception in Salt Lake City in the 1960's, there is a complete lac...

DMC Blown Away by 2017 Holiday Party

Last month, DMC employees and guests gathered to celebrate our accomplishments of 2016 and all we have to look forward to in the coming year. The annual Holiday Party is one of the most exciting events of the year. It's a great opportunity to chat with those you rarely get a chance to see and meet the new faces coming to DMC! Here's how we celebrated in each office. Denver DMC Denver started their evening with drinks and a social hour at Guard and Grace, a steak house in do...

Glow Sticks, Kickball, and Flip Cup in NYC

Glow Sticks, Kickball, and Flip Cup in NYC

This Fall, DMC New York participated in our very first sports team. The league, organized by NYC Social, was a combined Kickball + Flip Cup season. Games were held at a park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We were excited that the bases, ball, and players would be lit by glow sticks! Since we have a small office, we joined forces with other small groups to make a full team. The other people on our team were awesome, and being paired with non-DMC teammates was a great way to meet new ...

Denver Beer Tasting: Round 1

It wasn't too long ago that DMC Denver celebrated Opening Day, and now it is expanding into additional office space, with an expected completion in early 2017. We're excited to gain two new conference rooms in the process! Knowing the new rooms will follow our current theme of being named after Colorado breweries (Great Divide and Renegade are our current conference rooms), DMC Denver saw this as an opportunity to try some local brews during the naming process. What better way...

Sporting Clays Activity Fund Event

Some members of the DMC Denver team recently capitalized on the Activity Fund to take a trip out to Colorado Clays Shooting Park for a round of sporting clays. The sporting clays course at Colorado Clays features 15 shooting stations. Each station is equipped with two clay target throwers. The throwers are positioned differently at all of the stations, so each one presents a unique challenge. Check out our video highlights! How It Works There are 50 pairs of targets between ...

Star Wars Christmas Light Show

Star Wars Christmas Light Show

The Original Light Show I originally made this light show in 2014. It was Christmas time, and I happened to be hankering for a project, so we decided to decorate the house with a few LED lights and some Christmas mood music. It took me a few evenings and about $50 to complete the electrical part and wiring using a bunch of Arduinos and RF boards. I used NRF24L01 radios to control the lights from my PC and eliminate cables in my house.  I created the light sequences using an open so...

Geek Challenge: Infinipool

Geek Challenge: Infinipool

December’s Geek Challenge is about trying to make pool shots on an infinitely large pool table.  To describe the challenge, let’s look at a 3x5 grid of pool balls with the cue ball positioned in the center. We want to know what the odds are that we can hit a ball chosen at random with the cue ball (without jumping or curving around other balls). Looking at the possible cue ball paths, we see we can hit any ball except the 6 or the 9 because the 7 and 8 balls get in the way...

DMC’s Thanksgiving Food Drive

Thanksgiving is a time of year that revolves around food. Everyone looks forward to feasting on turkey, mashed potatoes and other sides, and yummy desserts. These are the usual trimmings of the Thanksgiving holiday, but this year, we wanted to pay special attention to the true meaning of Thanksgiving, which is gratitude.  That’s why this Thanksgiving, DMC held a food drive for our Chicago neighbors who are in need this holiday season. If you think about it, there is no better way t...

Here's How One Team at DMC Used $500 to Make People's Day in NYC

DMC holds an All Day Company Meeting (ADCM) a few times a year for each office. These meetings are done offsite at a fun location. The day is usually split into two parts: a morning meeting where we discuss something business related, and an afternoon part where we do something fun. This ADCM, the fun activity was "The DMC Cares Challenge". The New York and Boston offices joined forces and then divided into teams of 5-6 people. Each team had the afternoon to use $500 to&nb...

Escape (The Room) From New York

It was a dark, cold night. The air was teeming with mystery.  We walked the few blocks from DMC New York's office to the building that housed our destination. Inside the glass doors and seeing with no visible signs, we were forced to face our fears. “Is this the right building?” “Was is all a scam?” “Is everything a lie?” “Go to the 8th floor,” said the old security guard, listlessly. The elevator was finished with a bri...
