Summer Fun at DMC Boston

Summer Fun at DMC Boston

It's been a busy summer at DMC Boston. With a slew of fantastic new hires to bolster our forces, we've tried to live up to our reputation as DMC's most ridiculous office. From the exciting Yearly Office Event (YOE) where Boston hosted 30 DMCers in the White Mountains to the screening of the highly rated “Sharknado,” our office has had quite an adventurous summer. Camping (Indoor and Out) We headed to New Hampshire on an adventure in the great outdoors. We were ex...

Cooking Up New Ideas (and BBQ) at DMC's FedEx Day

DMC recently held another one of our favorite company-wide traditions... FedEx Day! On FedEx Day, everyone in the company takes a break from their day-to-day tasks and works on a project that they think will improve DMC. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with people we don't normally work with, develop new skills, and have fun. It's called a FedEx Day because the planned project must be delivered by the end of the day. With five offices and more employees than ever, the...

Boston FedEx Day Produces Smart Bike Lights

Boston FedEx Day Produces Smart Bike Lights

It's not fair.  Your car shows brake lights when it brakes. Some cool cars turn their lights on when you approach your car at night. Some really cool cars change the intensity of brake lights when they brake hard.  My bike has a red light that turns on when you press a button.  NOT FAIR.  For my FedEx Day project (a day where our company lets us make anything for 'next day delivery'), I brought my bike into the future with the help of a coworker and a ...

Creating a Slackbot Personal Assistant with .NET and an Office Fish

It wasn't too long ago that DMC Boston added a Particle Internet Button to remind us to feed our fish, Stevie. With Stevie doing so well, and DMC's FedEx Day coming up, we started brainstorming of what else could we do. We landed on turning Stevie the fish into an alternate online personality in the form of a personal assistant bot! Automated personal assistants are everywhere these days. Siri and Google Now keep us talking to our phones. Amazon Echo and Google Homes ar...

Using IoT to Feed a Fish

"Stevie is a fish. Stevie has no motors. Stevie prefers that you don’t tap on the tank. Stevie doesn’t know what Wi-Fi is. This is a picture of a computer. It’s not a fish. Stevie is a fish! I bet Stevie wishes he had hands so he could play with tablets." This description is printed on a sign that sits next to Stevie’s tank. Who is Stevie, you might ask? Stevie is DMC Boston’s office fish, and he is a valued member of the team. Like us, he ...

FedEx Day Fosters Continuous Innovation

DMC recently held our 7th FedEx Day across all offices. On FedEx Day, everyone in the company works on a project that interests them and that they think will improve DMC. It’s one of our favorite company traditions! It's called a FedEx Day because part of the project must absolutely, positively be delivered by the end of the day. You can read about past FedEx Days on our blog: here, here, here, here, here, and here. Also, check out this classic FedEx Day video! How Does FedEx Day...

DMC Blown Away by 2017 Holiday Party

Last month, DMC employees and guests gathered to celebrate our accomplishments of 2016 and all we have to look forward to in the coming year. The annual Holiday Party is one of the most exciting events of the year. It's a great opportunity to chat with those you rarely get a chance to see and meet the new faces coming to DMC! Here's how we celebrated in each office. Denver DMC Denver started their evening with drinks and a social hour at Guard and Grace, a steak house in do...

Here's How One Team at DMC Used $500 to Make People's Day in NYC

DMC holds an All Day Company Meeting (ADCM) a few times a year for each office. These meetings are done offsite at a fun location. The day is usually split into two parts: a morning meeting where we discuss something business related, and an afternoon part where we do something fun. This ADCM, the fun activity was "The DMC Cares Challenge". The New York and Boston offices joined forces and then divided into teams of 5-6 people. Each team had the afternoon to use $500 to&nb...

DMC Drone Day

DMC Drone Day

Part of the fun of working at DMC is the activity fund budget we get to use for monthly fun events. One of our new favorite things to do is buy pizza and fly some of the drones (quadcopters) we have around the park outside our office.  Before doing so, we made sure we were following all local regulations and rules regarding flying drones. Since we were flying for fun, and all the drones were under 0.55 lbs, we didn't need to worry about most of the new FAA rules.   &n...

Brimfield Antique Show Scavenger Hunt

At DMC, we enjoy spending time together outside of the workplace. Each office has a monthly Activity Fund budget that they can use for an employee-chosen event. Not only do we have fun, we get to know each other better, which in turn makes us a stronger team.   On Saturday, July 16th the Boston office held a scavenger hunt at the Brimfield Antique Show, the largest outdoor antique and collectibles show in the world. Three times a year, for an entire week, the rural town of Brimfield sees...

Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile race

DMC joined 324 other Boston companies to run the Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile race on June 9th, 2016. The race sold-out with a total of 9,475 particpants. Although DMC made up just 6 of those participants, DMC was the only company that had a runner in a robot box costume.   The race was a lollipop loop that started on Charles Street, went out and back along Commonwealth Ave towards Kenmore Square, and looped around the Public Garden to finish where it started. At 3.5 m...

Boston YOE 2016: Cape Cod & Martha's Vineyard

After DMC Boston's 20th Anniversary party, everyone took off to Cape Cod for the weekend for the Boston team's Yearly Office Event (YOE). The YOE is an opportunity for DMC employees to meet near one of DMC's locations for a trip planned by employees in that office. The YOE grew out of the popularity of our annual ski trip, and Houston celebrated its first YOE this spring. In Boston, we decided that everyone needs to pronounce YOE as "yo-ee." Many people from the Chicago ...

DMC Boston's 20th Anniversary Party

DMC is turning 20 this year, and we're hosting events in each of our five office locations to celebrate. Although our official anniversary date is in July, we marked DMC's 20-year milestone at the Boston office at the end of June.  Before the party began, Dan took some of the Chicago office visitors sailing in the Boston Harbor. The weather was great and everyone got to see an amazing sunset. Some of the DMCer's had never been sailing before, so it was a unique experience...

FedEx Day 2016

This May marked the 6th annual FedEx Day! All five of our offices participated in this year’s event. This special day allows our employees to dedicate an entire day to a project of their choosing that they normally would not have time for. This year, projects ranged from planting a garden on the Chicago office’s rooftop patio to making many different types of applications. Preparation for FedEx Day takes a lot of time. Each employee brainstorms what they want to do and gathers the...

Houston YOE 2016: Everything is Bigger in Texas

This spring, DMC held our first Yearly Office Event (YOE) in Houston. This was a great way for the Houston office to show employees from other offices a good time down south. Due to the careful planning and fun agenda assembled by DMC Houston, their visitors felt as if they were on a private Texas tour! The Rodeo The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was an amazing start to our trip. Most of us had never been to a rodeo before, so it was a cool experience. We got to see men wrestle bull...

High Fives & Good Vibes: DMC Boston Escapes "The Dig"

One of the biggest highlights of a new hire’s experience at DMC is their welcome party. Employees located in remote offices get twice the fun – they have their first welcome party while training in Chicago, then their second welcome party once they return to their home office.  While in Chicago, I joined other new employees for a game room welcome party at the Chicago Athletic Association. Back in Boston, I chose to do “The Dig”.  “The Dig” is ...
