OneDMC: Where Bigger Meets Better

OneDMC: Where Bigger Meets Better

In 2015, DMC opened new offices in Houston, Texas, and New York City, expanding our team from three to five locations. Also in 2015, we paid two random people to write and perform rap songs about us. These seemingly unrelated events have an important common thread: OneDMC. So what does "OneDMC" mean? The term originates from first-time visitors to our offices, who love to ask us if we have any relation to the rap group Run DMC. The idea has really grown on us, though, so the term...

Chicago's Wild Holiday Party at the Zoo

DMC's holiday parties have taken us everywhere from the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center to a former prison. This year, the Chicago office decided to go wild at the Lincoln Park Zoo.  After an onsite smell-test, we selected the zoo's Regenstein Small Mammal-Reptile House. The 32,000-square-foot building holds around 200 small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds. Cocktails in the Ecosystem The Regenstein offered the benefit of enjoying two diffe...

DMC's Holiday Cheer Extravaganza 2015

For the past few years, as another holiday season passes, I have observed that each holiday felt less and less like I remember. This year, the source of my waning holiday spirit finally dawned on me: I'm an adult now. I was determined to restore the festive spirit. On November 31st, I stayed at work until 8pm adorning my space with ornaments, lights and shiny silver garlands. I sprinted headfirst into December with a dazzling display of wintery cheer. Within a week or so, string lights, t...

DMC Bubble Soccer Activity Fund Event

Just before the leaves began to turn this year, DMC's Chicago office decided to take advantage of the end of our good weather and head to Lincoln Park for some fun in big, bumpable bubbles. If you've never heard of bubble soccer, it entails climbing into massive, inflated plastic bubbles that make sports infinitely more fun (and challenging!) The bubble soccer company had a slight misunderstanding and ended up going to the wrong place in Lincoln Park, which resulted in 12 people from DMC...

DMC Welcome Party at Adler After Dark

For my welcome party to DMC, we went to the Halloween edition of Adler After Dark at the Adler Planetarium. We hung out at the office for pizza, beer, and general hanging out before heading over to the museum. I had never been to the Planetarium before, so I was really excited to see what they had to offer. Once we arrived, we made our way to Café Galileo's glass pavilion where we enjoyed various beverages in front of a spectacular view of the Chicago skyline. The "Dark Matter" ...

Hello Fall! Happy Hour at DMC

To welcome fall this year, DMC Chicago held a pie-and-cider party that was a great success. There were babies! And dogs! And cats! And most importantly, a wide variety of pies. We ordered in pizza, and enjoyed apple and pumpkin pies homemade by application developer Jordan, who is well-known by now for his excellent pie-making. Unlike DMC's Denver team, which is arguably the most athletic of the bunch, we didn't do any exercise to earn it. While our apple cider warmed in the C...

Duck, Duck, DAQmx: NIDays Chicago 2015 Recap

DMC exhibited at NIDays Chicago last week for the third consecutive year. The one-day, multi-track conference explores the latest technologies for measurement, embedded, and test systems. We gathered at Navy Pier on a beautiful fall day, ready to enhance our technical knowledge, connect with other local NI users, and introduce visitors to DMC. Our tilt table demo proved to be a popular draw and DMC's team had a great time showing it off at the booth.  As always, meeting ...

Chicagoland LabVIEW User Group Meeting at DMC

DMC hosted the Chicagoland LabVIEW User’s Group meeting at our office last month. It was another great turnout with over 30 local LabVIEW users and National Instruments present as well, with Kalin Taskov and Al Rudnick joining to participate. Beer on a Boat: Exactly as Fun as it Sounds

After being in Chicago for over four years, I realized that I had never been on a boat tour down the Chicago River. So coming up with the idea was relatively easy. I noticed that many people at DMC enjoy beer, and boating ventures are very popular in the summer, so a booze cruise seemed like an ideal welcoming party. The week leading up to the event was pretty stormy, so I was afraid the boat ride would be either miserable or cancelled altogether. Luckily, the evening was perfect! The ride st...

DMC Hosts Chicago LabVIEW User Group Meeting on August 20

DMC will be hosting the Chicagoland LabVIEW User's Group meeting on Thursday, August 20, 2015. We've had the pleasure of hosting local LabVIEW developers for several years now. This year's topic is LabVIEW User Interface Design. We'll begin the session by discussing tips and tricks related to style, dialogs, and multi-screen applications. We will continue by examining common LabVIEW UI/UX design pitfalls and considerations. Finally, we'll explore taking a wireframe to real...

DMC Trivia Competition Welcome Party

For my DMC welcome party, I joined in with two other employees, Molly and Kevin, to hold a shared celebration at a local bar's trivia competition. It should come as no surprise that a lot of us are trivia fiends given DMC's Core Values of hiring smart people and having fun! While some DMC employees had attended the bar's Monday trivia nights in the past as activity fund events, this was the first time we had the entire back room to ourselves. With a ton of beer...

DMC Ping Pong App Upgrade 2.0

Anyone who has visited DMC's Chicago office knows that we love a good game of ping pong. We have an internally-developed DMC Ping Pong App to keep track of final scores from each game and generate rankings to show just how awesome (or not awesome) each employee is. During FedEx Day 2014, Jordan and Sudeep set up a .NET library for interfacing to a GoPro camera via Wi-Fi that allowed control of primary camera functions. The GoPro .NET library was then used to implement a .NET console app that...

DMC Chicago's Mad Science Party

DMC proved just how cool science can be at our Chicago office's Mad Science Party on June 4th, 2015. We've held several fun themed open houses previously including a carnival, Boston Bash, and Oktoberfest, and this party was no exception. More than 140 guests joined us for a night of out-of-this-world food and drinks, zany decorations, and electrifying attractions. The rooftop deck filled up quickly due to the beautiful weather, and we think a mad scientist would have felt right at home ...

Chicago Fly Fishing Excursion

Chicago Fly Fishing Excursion

As a new employee at DMC Chicago, I’m quickly learning just how easy it is to plan exciting outings with my fellow coworkers. At our first mentor lunch, Gareth and I were musing on how much we wanted to learn how to fly fish. With some planning from Gareth and a survey to gauge interest, two weeks later we were out on the North Pond in Lincoln Park with 21 DMCers and Chicago Fly Fishing Outfitters learning the basics.  The class walked us through the general premise of fly fishing,...

Wait Wait... Don't Tell DMC!

Earlier this month, in a desperate, yet ultimately futile, attempt to take our minds off the increasingly frigid weather, DMCers from the Chicago office sought refuge in the warm embrace of National Public Radio. Not with tote bags or endless donation requests, but with the hit show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! Don’t let the over-punctuated name fool you, WWDTM (as it’s known to insiders who love acronyms and write blogs), is full of laughs and sharp insights into the week&r...
