DMC Goes to Hyrule

DMC Goes to Hyrule

Hyrule, of course, is a fictional kingdom in the Legend of Zelda video game series. For an amazing activity fund event, DMC went to see Zelda Symphony of the Goddess at the famous Chicago Theatre.   To get into the spirit, I dressed as Link, along with many other attendees at the Symphony Orchestra. The concert featured the most beloved music from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past, The Wind Waker, and many other Zelda titles in the series. The ...

DMC Runs the 2013 Hot Chocolate 5/15K

DMC has been known to run for chocolate, and this year's Hot Chocolate 5/15K was no exception. Eleven DMC employees and friends rose bright and early on Sunday, November 3 for a jog with the promise of a sweet after party. We were rewarded with perfect running weather during an unpredictable Chicago autumn. With sunny skies and a slight chill in the air, we took to the city streets along with over 40,000 fellow athletes sugar fans. While Team DMC was evenly split be...

On Top of the Game at DMC Chicago's ADCM

DMC Chicago’s All Day Company Meeting (or ADCM for short) was all set for Thursday, August 18th. The theme of the day was Customer Service Excellence. The schedule, which Frank and I had spent the past week meticulously putting together, was ambitious. We figured that an hour presentation, followed by two hours of brainstorming, lunch, then an outdoor ropes course would not only be an awesome team-building, camaraderie fostering, memory-making opportunity, but would also generate some grea...

A Rocking Welcome to DMC

A Rocking Welcome to DMC

It was to my great surprise that I was asked what I would like to do for my welcome party. A welcome party. I had never heard of such a thing! After agonizing over an open set of choices (I had only begun DMC’s current book club piece on decision making), I realized that I had never been to the House of Blues, but that I had heard great things about it (from family that were of blues-going age at that time), and so I thought that could be fun. When looking at the list of bands playing that...

Chicago LabVIEW User Group Meeting Hosted at DMC

DMC hosted another great LabVIEW User Group Meeting at our Chicago office last week. This year’s agenda included a recap of the recent NIWeek 2013 with personal anecdotes from the DMC team and a peek at new features and capabilities of LabVIEW 2013. The Chicago LabVIEW User Group is a community of National Instruments users, partners, and customers in the Chicago area. The meeting at DMC had another fantastic turnout with 22 local LabVIEW users. National Instruments was well r...

DMC's Company Picnic

DMC's Company Picnic

DMC held its first company picnic a few weeks ago at Chicago's LaBagh Woods. I have fond childhood memories of attending my parents' company picnic, especially hanging out with the other kids from their workplace, tossing water balloons, and jumping on the moonwalk. I wanted my children to have those memories as well, and luckily was able to make that happen with DMC's Activity Fund budget. Finding a location was my biggest challenge, as there aren't many grassy areas in ...

DMC Hosts Future Engineers of After School Matters

DMC recently partnered with After School Matters to host a group of future engineers at our Chicago office. After School Matters is a non-profit organization whose mission is, “to provide Chicago public high school teens opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond.” The group of students who visited our office was particularly interested in robotics so we were eager to show them around. We won the group of about tw...

Best of Pitchfork Music Festival 2013

There are plenty of music lovers at DMC, including a mezzo soprano opera singer and our very own brass band. So when Pitchfork Music Festival came to town, several of us were excited to utilize DMC's activity fund and check out the festival in Chicago's Union Park.  We enjoyed a sunny summer day of musical performances on Saturday, July 20, and not even a bit of rain could dampen the fun of the closing sets. We're already looking forward to next year's festival, but until...

Video Game Night at DMC

Just for fun, DMC recently held a video game night (with pizza!) utilizing our activity fund. We featured old school and new school Nintendo games including Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart for N64 and Wii. Some of the DMC engineers had extreme nostalgia playing and felt like they were back in college! The most popular Nintendo characters of choice were Pikachu, Kirby, Link, and Bowser. Sam Weber won top honors on N64, while David Ufford beat out the Wii competition. For the non-gamers, there ...

Bastille Day 8K 2013

Bastille Day 8K 2013

One of DMC's favorite summer traditions is celebrating Bastille Day with a race. The Bastille Day Run has moved from Chicago's West Loop to Lincoln Park in the past few years, and added an 8K option to the original 5K. Being DMC, we opted for the most competitive choice and several employees enjoyed a 4.9733 mile jaunt in the park on July 11. One of the more fun aspects of this run is that it takes place on a Thursday evening (as opposed to sunrise on a weekend). The weather on r...

DMC Runs the 2013 Shamrock Shuffle

The Shamrock Shuffle 8K is a favorite DMC tradition. Employees have represented DMC in the 4.97 mile race through downtown Chicago every year since 2005. The Shamrock Shuffle is meant to be the first big race of spring and is traditionally held in March, but after a few years of unpredictable Chicago weather the race date is now in April. The weather cooperated on April 7, treating us to sunny skies and a slight breeze off Lake Michigan. It was a great day for enjoying a run through the city,...

DMC at Disney on Ice

Being the lone DMC Mom, I wanted to plan an opportunity for DMC kids to take advantage of one of the cool DMC sponsored activities. The perfect child friendly event: Disney on Ice at the United Center!  DMC employees, spouses and 10 DMC kids met in Chicago to watch the Disney princesses tell their stories while gliding over a stage of ice. We watched Ariel (The Little Mermaid) fall in love with a human, Belle (Beauty and the Beast) be enchanted by the Beast, Rapunzel (Tangled) discover...

DMC's 2013 Holiday Party

85 Guests 55 Filets of Beef 20 Seared Salmon Fillets 125 Specialty Martinis 81 Glasses of Maker’s 46 1 Bud Light (Really?) That, my friends, is how DMC rolls. As the newest member of DMC’s Party Planning Committee (PPC) I had an inside look at the planning process behind DMC’s legendary company parties. With past soirees including an Odyssey Cruise and a bowling competition at Lucky Strike, it became apparent that few...

DMC Participates in Chicago's Hot Chocolate 5K

Who doesn’t want to run for chocolate? This was the question we had to ask ourselves in early November when the opportunity arose to participate in Chicago's Hot Chocolate 15K/5K. This 40,000 person event rewards people with hot chocolate and chocolate fondue for running either the 5K course or the 15K course. As if that wasn’t reason enough, the main charity partner is the Ronald McDonald House, so you know you’re running for a good cause too! A look at t...

DMC's Paintball Welcome Party

Welcome to DMC, now we’re going to shoot you……with paintball guns!  As fresh faces at DMC, Adnaan Velji and I decided to combine our respective welcome parties (an excellent perk of working at DMC) into four hours of somewhat friendly paintball competition. Twenty-five DMC employees and their significant/insignificant others showed up at Paintball Explosion in East Dundee, IL to join the fight. Despite the early December date the Sun Gods, or perhaps global ...

DMC's Night of Magic

Engineers are stereotypically a skeptical bunch, and DMC prides itself on a talent pool consisting of grads from some of the best engineering programs in the country. This was the rather dubious crowd that third generation magician Mr. Dennis Watkins faced on the evening of November 17. The occasion? A triple-threat welcome party for Otto, Shannon, and Stephanie.   DMC’s Night of Magic began at the historic Palmer House Hotel where icons such as Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Jud...

DMC Presents the Best of Beer Hoptacular 2012

DMC's latest activity fund adventure took us to a beer tasting under a big top tent for Beer Hoptacular. "Celebrating the art of beer brewing and appreciation" sounded like our idea of an evening, so about a dozen DMC employees and friends headed to the Riverfront Theater last Friday. The third annual Chicago Beer Hoptacular brought 60 breweries featuring over 140 different beers together. In addition to tasting a variety of beers from Chicago and across the country, we enjoyed acc...

Arcade + Beer = Geek Heaven

I enjoy arcade games - who doesn't?  My enthusiasm must not be a secret, as when an arcade bar  opened up not too far from our office, several coworkers made sure to let me know about it.  Arcade games are best enjoyed with heavy competition, and DMC's night at Emporium Arcade had some impressive contenders. We had a good turnout of over a dozen DMC engineers.  The most popular games of the evening were X-Men, The Simpsons, and Frogger. I spent the night trying to ...
