Data Analysis, Data Mining, and Reporting

Data Analysis, Data Mining, and Reporting

A critical component of test and measurement systems is the ability to translate acquired data into real knowledge.

Where should I store my data? Local data storage may be all that is needed. Storing data on a server or the cloud can make it more readily available via intranet or internet. It may be best to integrate storage into existing data systems.

What data format should I use? Simple flat text, csv, or Excel formats often times get the job done. XML is flexible and powerful. Databases such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle allow leveraging the platform’s power. We often recommend TDMS which has very fast read/write speeds and provides reporting flexibility with its embedded meta data. Sometimes it is important to standardize on the formats your team is familiar with. More complex formats can often be easily translated in the simple flat formats for quick manipulation.

How do I want to view my data? Variable date ranges and modular variable plotting provide dynamic, flexible reports. The ability to quickly zoom in and out of data can provide focus in a sea of numbers. Standardized reports can be great for traceability needs. Flexible search systems make mountains of data useable. Careful layout of information, selection of fonts, and use of colors and space provide clarity.
