Functional Circuit Test Systems for Complex PCBAs
Each of DMC’s functional circuit test (FCT) systems is customized in order to provide reliable electrical access, accurate stimuli, automated test sequences, and total production traceability. The FCT system can be configured to include bed-of-nails or pin-connector fixtures, modular instruments, programmable power supplies, NI TestStand or lightweight test sequencing software, and database or MES communication.
DMC provides the greatest value when an application extends beyond standard functional checks. Our engineers develop systems for higher voltage, current, or power requirements, custom sensor and load emulation, firmware flashing, automotive communications, mixed-signal validation, and other non-standard test needs requiring greater flexibility, integration depth, and long-term maintainability than typical off-the-shelf platforms can provide.

Why Functional Circuit Testing Matters in Production
Structural approval during the inspection phase does not ensure the functionality of populated PCBAs in the end product. Many of the most expensive faults only show themselves when the board has been powered, flashed, communicates with other devices, analyzes sensor signals, and controls real loads in operational conditions.
Functional Circuit Testing is performed to prove the functionality of boards before their transition to final assembly, end-of-line testing, or shipment to customers. It helps to reduce costs associated with downstream reworks, maintain manufacturing productivity, and gather valuable information for quality assurance, audits, and continuous improvement. This is particularly relevant in automotive, battery, industrial, and embedded electronics, as communication buses, mixed-signal I/Os, and power stages need to work together seamlessly.
PCBA Functional Test Coverage for Power, Sensors, Firmware, and Communications

Why DMC for Functional Circuit Test System Integration
The DMC team unifies fixture design, electrical engineering, software development, and production data capture & analysis into one cohesive package that helps resolve issues related to high power, emulation, communications, and changing production needs for Functional Circuit Testing.
Since the DMC approach is platform agnostic, it allows us the flexibility of not being locked into any particular vendor hardware, toolset, or programming paradigm. The customer’s FCT needs, protocols, throughput, and production environment requirements are analyzed before a technology fit is determined.
As a trusted systems integrator, DMC delivers scalable, maintainable FCT systems that align with the customer’s existing infrastructure.

FAQs
What is a Functional Circuit Test system?
A Functional Circuit Test system verifies that your populated printed circuit board assembly performs as intended before it moves to final assembly or ships to your customer. Rather than only checking whether components and connections are present, FCT powers the board and evaluates its actual operation. Depending on your product, this may include power-up behavior, voltage and current measurements, firmware execution, communication interfaces, sensor inputs, load outputs, and overall pass/fail performance under controlled operating conditions.
When should I use Functional Circuit Test instead of In-Circuit Test?
Functional Circuit Test is appropriate when you need to confirm that your completed PCBA operates correctly, not simply that it was assembled correctly. In-Circuit Test is commonly used to identify structural defects such as incorrect components, soldering issues, opens, and shorts. FCT evaluates the board’s integrated behavior, including voltage regulation, current consumption, firmware operation, communication buses, sensor inputs, and output or load response. The two methods can complement one another, but FCT provides greater confidence that your board will function correctly in the finished product.
Does every PCBA Functional Test system need a bed-of-nails fixture?
No. A bed-of-nails fixture can provide fast, repeatable access to numerous test points and is often a strong choice for higher-volume production. However, your system may instead use product connectors, cable harnesses, pogo-pin interfaces, or a combination of access methods. DMC evaluates your required test coverage, production volume, cycle time, fixture life, board accessibility, and budget before recommending an approach.
Can firmware flashing, communications testing, and production traceability be combined in one station?
Yes. DMC can integrate firmware programming, functional verification, communication testing, and production data collection into a single automated test station. Your system may include CAN or serial communications, Ethernet and USB interface validation, automated NI TestStand or lightweight test sequencing, barcode-based product tracking, report generation, SQL database storage, and MES integration. Combining these functions can reduce separate workstations, simplify operator workflows, improve traceability, and help ensure that every unit is tested using the correct firmware, configuration, and acceptance limits.
Is my product a good fit for a DMC Functional Circuit Test system?
DMC is particularly well suited for applications with requirements that extend beyond standard pin-level measurements. This may include automotive ECUs, battery management systems, power electronics, mixed-signal embedded PCBAs, or products requiring high voltage, current, or power. DMC can also help when your test requires custom sensor or load emulation, specialized communication protocols, firmware flashing, synchronized measurements, or flexibility for future product variants. When a conventional test platform cannot adequately reproduce your product’s operating environment, DMC can develop a system around the specific behavior you need to validate.
Will my Functional Circuit Test system be locked into one hardware or software platform if I choose DMC?
No. DMC is a platform-agnostic systems integrator, so your architecture is selected around your technical requirements, production needs, existing standards, and long-term support strategy. Depending on the application, DMC may integrate NI PXI or CompactDAQ hardware, Pickering switching and simulation products, NI TestStand, LabVIEW, DMCquencer, SQL databases, or instrumentation from other qualified manufacturers. This approach allows you to use the technologies that best fit your application while maintaining visibility into the system architecture, software, documentation, and future upgrade path.
