SharePoint Designer Workflow Mysteries: Why Your Changes Won't Take Effect

I recently encountered an error in SharePoint Designer without a lot of documented information available and wanted to share my workaround with others who may be experiencing it. The bug occurs when attempting a specific action in SharePoint Designer 2007 and 2010, known as “collect data from user.”

In SharePoint Designer 2007 the options you choose will not be marked as complete when you click “Finish.” The solution is to click through the options dialogue again, clicking “Next” each time even if you do not make any settings changes. After you have clicked through all of the options the second time the changes should take effect.

In SharePoint Designer 2010, I did not select “Approve” to appear as the default selection. Every time I deselected “Approve” it did not accept my settings, and clicking through all the settings did not always work. To reach a resolution, it sometimes requires multiple attempts at clicking through the options.
