DMC Chicago Welcomes its Newest Engineer

DMC Chicago Welcomes its Newest Engineer

This is only my second month at DMC, and so far everything is going great. I’ve had the opportunity to work for a couple of exceptional companies prior to DMC, and so my expectations of what a great job ought to be were already pretty high. DMC, though, has exceeded all my expectations. Everyone at DMC did a lot of little things to make me feel welcome and to help me hit the ground running. I got to the office on Day One and everything was ready to go; even my business cards were alr...

The DMC Portal: Connecting Chicago and Boston

For my FedEx Day project, I worked from DMC Boston on the DMC Portal (a name-in-progress). The DMC Portal is a system of two stations – one in DMC Chicago, the other in DMC Boston – with a computer, television, and webcam apiece. These are connected via internet, and each shows the other’s kitchen, allowing the two offices to interact on a more informal basis and maintain some continuity in that way. Currently, each is running Skype, with the ability to create a connectio...

DMC Cooks Up Communication at Our All Day Company Meeting

For our recent All Day Company Meeting (ADCM), DMC headed over to Cooking Fools in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood. It's fun day of formulating goals, brainstorming, and teambuilding that has taken us to places like Wrigley Field, laser tag, and on a Ferris Bueller-style tour of Chicago in the past. We started off the morning with breakfast and a few brief presentations on effective sales communication. Then it was time for us to take on the challenge and brainstorm our own sal...

North Branch Works Features DMC Chicago

North Branch Works (formerly the LEED Council) recently featured DMC in their April Newsletter as one of the newest members of NBW. North Branch Works is a local organization that supports businesses and employment in Chicago’s North River and Addison Industrial areas. In addition to advocating for “better access to city services and programs” NBW has also “been pursuing sustainable development objectives” in the city since 1982. DMC had the unique opportunity to...

DMC Welcomes its Newest Employee with a Fiesta

Last Friday witnessed the welcoming of yours truly to the DMC family in the form of a Welcome Party. At DMC, we welcome every new employee with a party at a location of their choice, and I chose Taco Joint for their unlimited tacos and margaritas. The event proved to be one that everyone enjoyed thoroughly and that few wanted to leave even after the food and drinks had ended! The Welcome Party tradition is very valuable for new employees at DMC because it gives them the chance to know their c...

FOX News Chicago Features DMC

After being named to the Crain's Chicago Business List of "Best Places to Work" in Chicago, FOX 32 News swung by the office to chat with DMC President Frank Riordan and see what DMC is all about. What wowed reporter Jake Hammilton most about DMC? Our colloborative and spacious office space, Wiskie the office dog, our Swayze room (named after our admiration of Patrick Swyaze's customer service in the movie Roadhouse), and our monthly activity fund to name a few. Crain...

Shamrock Shuffle 2014 Meets the DMC Competition

At DMC, an opportunity for a healthy dose of competition never goes untapped. Our annual participation in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k is always a good excuse to get our competitive muscles burning (and our real muscles too). DMC employees have been running the 4.97 mile race throughout Chicago's cityscape since 2005; and every year, we do our darndest to not only beat each other, but to beat our past times as well.  The Chiberan temperatures parted ways for a few rays of sunshine on ...

DMC's Favorite Sips from the Chicago Cider Summit

Anyone living in the Midwest will agree that this winter has been full of too much snow and cold weather. So, when the Chicago Cider Summit was announced, we DMCers just couldn’t let go of the chance to warm up the winter. On this typical February afternoon, a group of us met at Navy Pier for the event. It was a blast! There were numerous ciders that we had never tried before, such as herbal ciders with a basil taste, dessert ice ciders, and apricot ciders. There was a lot of de...

DMC Digs In at Chicago Restaurant Week

Restaurant Week in Chicago was one of the few things that helped us Midwesterners pull through this year’s Polar Vortex. With a line-up of restaurants spanning cuisines from the east of Asia’s influence to the coasts of Peruvian perfection, DMC employees were not wanting for either innovative or traditional menu selections. Our Marketing Team made reservations at Tanta, Embeya, Demera and the Pump Room with employees having the option to dine at one or more of the restaurants. On ...

WhirlyBall Welcome, DMC Style

WhirlyBall Welcome, DMC Style

Our recent outing will definitely be inducted into the DMC Welcome Party Hall of Fame. For my welcome party we took our “talents” to WhirlyBall around the corner from our office. I had heard that WhirlyBall is a DMC favorite and I myself had never tried it, what a perfect opportunity! If I had to sum up the night I’d say we came, we saw, but we definitely did not conquer. However, in true DMC fashion we stayed true to our sixth core value and we definitely had fun! The turn...

DMC Company Poker Tournament

We DMCers can get pretty competitive in just about anything: from WhirlyBall to golf to bowling we like to keep a friendly air of rivalry live around the office. This past Friday was no exception as we wrapped up the work week with a company Poker Tournament. Complete with DMC card decks, authentic poker chips, pizza, Wiskie (the dog), whiskey (the drink), a fine array of bourbon and scotch, and a host of eager players, we were ready to kick the weekend off right. This isn't the...

DMC's Holiday Party at the Crystal Gardens

Ninety-seven DMC employees and their significant others, friends, and family made it (despite sub-zero temperatures) to Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier for the annual DMC Holiday Party. It was a month and a half of epic planning: booking a photographer, selecting menu items, coordinating hotel stays for the four new hires who joined us, and making sure everyone was going to have the most fun possible. When the big night arrived, we couldn't have asked for things to have turned out bette...

Bowling and Beer: A Perfect DMC Welcome

My DMC welcome party was a joint venture with Tim Johnson who started at DMC just before I did. I read about the famed welcome parties before even interviewing at DMC and had been excited to potentially have my own ever since! Tim and I decided on the thrilling combination of bowling and local beer - Seven Ten Lounge and Atlas Brewing Company. Little did I know that Tim and his wife each owned their own bowling balls and bowling shoes! Although I wasn't on that level of expertise, I had a s...

DMC Makes Snow

Temperatures in Chicago plummeted to 16 degrees below zero yesterday, with the wind chill hitting 40 degrees below zero. That’s just a bit chillier than our usual deck activity temperatures, but we thought we’d make the most of the blustery cold and have some fun. In the video below, a pitcher of boiling hot water is thrown into the air and instantly turns into a cloud of “snow” that’s quickly blown away. Why does it happen? Hot water is already pretty close to a...

TIFWorks Helps DMC Engineers Cultivate Technical and Soft Skills

Earlier this year DMC was awarded funding from the City of Chicago’s TIFWorks Program. TIFWorks is a government program that “stimulates business success by funding workforce-training costs for companies located in tax increment financing (TIF) districts.” The program awards grants to small companies in the City of Chicago for training purposes and is one of the few city funded initiatives to support the training of incumbent employees. Due to the outstanding level of support D...

Holiday Cheer at DMC

DMC hosted a Holiday Cheer Event on Friday, December 13th for DMC employees and their families. Our official Holiday Party is a formal adult-only event that is typically held in January when everyone’s calendar opens up. The Holiday Cheer Event was a casual get-together for all ages and included lots of holiday-themed activities. We started by making holiday puppets out of pipe cleaners, felt, and googly eyes!  Then the kids had a chance to let out their energy during the Candy Can...

Engineering Meets Pediatric Medicine at Lurie Children's Hospital

Being an engineer means you have unique skills to contribute to the world. These contributions can include improving quality of products, increasing efficiency, and generally allowing workers and companies to be more successful in their goals.  A recent project at DMC brought this social benefit even closer to home with the opportunity to work with the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.  DMC was approached with a very special need—to develop the w...
