DMC's Brassband Debut

DMC's Brassband Debut

If you attended the recent Tres de Mayo party at DMC's office, you hopefully walked out with tunes like “Basin Street Blues” or “Muskrat Ramble” stuck in your head.  As one of the founding members of the DMC brassband, I’m proud to announce that our first “gig” was a hit! We played a set of six songs during the peak of the party and filled the southern half of the office with swingin’ traditional Dixieland and brassband music. Cred...

Shamrock Shuffle 2012

On March 25, 2012, for the 7th year in a row, DMC competed in the Shamrock Shuffle, an 8K (4.98 miles) race through downtown Chicago. It was a great day for the race and we had more than respectable results. Of special note is race newcomer Dan Lawler who looks like he might be able to give Sully a run for his money. Check out posts from some of our previous races here: Hustle up the Hancock 2011 Shamrock Shuffle 2011 Chase Corporate Challenge 2011 Hustle up the Hancock ...

DMC Holiday Party Takes to the Lanes

Every year, DMC celebrates our holiday party sometime after the holidays and this year we took to the lanes at Lucky Strike. It was a great setting to socialize and, of course, enjoy some friendly competition. We even held a special bowling-themed Geek Challenge. Congrats to oncoming DMC employee Han Yang for claiming victory!

Leap Day Competition at DMC

Leap Day Competition at DMC

On February 29th, DMC celebrated Leap Day with a little friendly competition.  With some tape on the floor, I set up an event court for a Standing Long Jump competition.  Standing Long Jump was an Olympic event until from 1900-1912, and I remembered it from grade school gym class.  In addition to the starting line, I marked the 3.47m Olympic record.  It seemed like an impossibly far distance, and before we started some wondered whether anybody would get halfway ther...

Jimmy's iO Welcome Party

Jimmy's iO Welcome Party

I started at DMC two months ago and it has been a very busy two months. Since joining DMC I’ve been focused on one large project, but the project is divided up into many distinct sections and I have been involved in nearly every one the sections. I have been creating user interfaces, the control logic, hardware addressing, and what seems like a million other things. I enjoy being busy and DMC has more than enough work to keep me busy. While DMC keeps everyone active in the office, DMC a...

Beer, and Bacon, and DMC

You may or may not be surprised to learn  that beer and bacon rank highly on the favorite things list of many a DMC employee. So when we heard that Paddy Long's, a Lakeview neighborhood pub, hosts a regular Beer and Bacon Tasting, we booked a DMC social outing. Nearly twenty DMC employees and friends enjoyed the tasting of five cuts of bacon paired with five beers. The entire offering was delicious, but our table's favorites were the smoky Danish bacon and the brow...

DMC FedEx Day Redux

DMC FedEx Day Redux

After the success of DMC's first FedEx Day earlier this year, we were excited to hold our second edition a few weeks ago. A FedEx Day is reserved for everyone to devote an entire day working on a company improvement project that personally inspires them. It's called a FedEx Day because the person or team must deliver something the next day, although there is some upfront prep time. DMC was inspired to try a FedEx Day after reading about it in Daniel Pink's Drive, a DMC Book Club s...

DMC's Oktoberfest Open House

On October 20th we hosted an open house at DMC's new office for our first ever Oktoberfest. Since I've heard that a picture can be worth 0b1111101000 words, I figured I'd save most of my prose and let the pictures below do the talking. Also, there's a really exciting video at the bottom if you want to just skip to that. *Click an image to enlarge Anjali at the welcome table with our fantastic Oktoberfest banner. The table is filled with our commemorative Oktoberfest ...

Ziplining and Customer Service

A few times each year DMC holds an all-day company meeting. It's a chance for all of our team members to discuss our goals and have some fun together. Past meetings have taken us anywhere from Chicago's waterfront, to an improv session, to the Melrose Park Grand Prix. For our most recent all-day company we chartered a bus and took the entire to the treetop canopies of Wisconsin. On the trip to Wisconsin, I gave a presentation on DMC's Customer Service Fundamentals, with an impr...

DMC Goes Kayaking on the Chicago River

While we spend a lot of time together here at the office, we also try to organize fairly frequent DMC outings. Since we tend to be fairly active people, our summer events seem to skew in that direction as well. In the past few months we’ve entered a few races here in Chicago (Shamrock Shuffle, Chase Corporate Challenge, and the Terrapin 5k), played in a sand volleyball league at North Beach, had a few boat nights on the lake, and last week, went kayaking on the Chicago River.  &nbs...

Team Spike DMC Takes to the Beach

With the weather in Chicago finally breaking and summer now in full swing, several DMC engineers have recently joined forces to form a beach volleyball team, Spike DMC.  While DMC has had several company teams in soccer and other sports leagues in the past, and participated in an indoor sand volleyball league last fall, this is the first time DMC has made an appearance on a beach volleyball court. Spike DMC is participating in the coed intermediate 6's volleyball league on Tuesday ev...

Farewell Kingsbury

Farewell Kingsbury

This past Friday (April 29th), we started and......several hours later....finished our move from 1333 Kingsbury to 2222 Elston. It was pretty crazy as we (and a team of movers) dismantled the place and hauled everything to the new building. I took a video of the aftermath. Even though the place looks totally trashed, It was a really good space for DMC over the past 7 years. Kingsbury was definitely the Millennium Falcon of offices: "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it ...

DMC is on the Move

DMC is on the Move

After seven years, DMC is moving at the end of April.  The primary reason for the move is more space, as we are continuing to grow. Our new address. which will be communicated multiple times in the coming months, is: 2222 N. Elston Avenue 2nd Floor Chicago, IL 60614 Benefits of the new space include better parking for our customers, a rooftop deck, a really cool interactive display case and a lot more collaboration space. In a nod to our history, we will be naming me...

More racing fun with friends at Argonne

DMC teamed up with our friends at Argonne National Labs for a fun-filled night of dinner and go-kart racing. We started out at one of our favorite spots, the Kerry Piper for some great Irish food, then headed to Melrose Park Grand Prix' new location for the real action.  (Note, the smartest of the bunch ate light for every advantage on the track!) This was a great way of celebrating another year of working together.  DMC has been working with the lab on various projects for a...

DMC to Lead Team Collaboration Workshop at Microsoft’s Midwest Headquarters

DMC will be leading an executive breakfast workshop on March 16, 2011 at Microsoft's Midwest Headquarters in Downers Grove, IL. The event will focus on making the switch to a collaborative company culture and applying technology like Microsoft SharePoint to achieve your business goals. As the Heath brothers (authors of Made to Stick and Switch) say, “To make a switch, you need to script the critical moves!” DMC will assist all attendees in creating a personalized playbook with...

A Whirlyball Welcome

A Whirlyball Welcome

On Tuesday, October 12, 2010 DMC decided to welcome our newest member, Jason Mayes, with a Whirlyball outing.  This being my first Whirly experience, I was unsure of what to expect; and varying descriptions of ‘‘basketball meets jai alai’ or ‘bumper cars meet lacrosse’ were not much help. For weeks prior to visiting I heard whispers around the office of strategy, deceit, and past battle wounds.  My research did tell me that the game was founded in Sal...

DMC Fun on, and off, and in, the Water

Like we do about three times a year, we had an all-company all day off-site meeting last Friday. The agenda for the day was pretty fantastic - we all loaded up on my boat at Belmont Harbor (maybe a little crowded), headed south to the Chicago Harbor Lock, & then down the river to Ping Tom Park. Once at Ping Tom Park, we broke up into several small groups and handed video cameras to each group with the mission of recording stories that capture DMC's culture, capabilities, lessons learn...

Bastille Day 2010

Ok, we really knew about this from the the Shamrock Shuffle earlier this year, but Johnathan Sullivan is now, without any ambiguity, proclaimed: "World's Fastest Engineer who works at DMC" I enjoyed being in that esteemed position for a short period (although my standing had one more modifier - see here). Team DMC had a fantastic showing in the Chicago Bastille Day 5K, held in Lincoln Park on July 7th. Our team came in third place out of 26 registered teams (and a total...

Northwestern Design Competition 2010

DMC has once again sponsored the Northwestern Design Competition. Design Competition is a contest that occurs every year at Northwestern and pits fully autonomous robots against each other to accomplish a specific task. This year that task was following a line maze and retrieving wooden and metal tokens to score points. The robots competed head to head which made collisions a very real possibility. Those of you who keep up on the DMC blog may have read the employee spotlight that detail...
